Pacasmayo KSP Update: Wrap-Up

ksp_slide32

Pacasmayo, Peru — October 28, 2011: Today concludes the KSP’s Pacasmayo Peru Kite Surf Pro with the official awards ceremony taking place at 6 p.m. (PET) at El Faro Adventure Resort, Pacasmayo. Dominating this leg of the World Championships, the Brazilians earned three spots on the podium.

Congregating at the world’s longest kite surfing wave on the planet, the world’s top 36 kite surfers came together in the northern Peruvian city of Pacasmayo for the second stop of the KSP World Championship Kite Surfing Tour.

Following four days of marginal wind and waves, the action kicked off on October 23 — mid-way through the 10-day holding period. As the surf began firing at four- to seven-feet, 24 men and 12 women from 15 different countries duked it out over the following three days for the coveted tour stop title.

Two days of competition boiled the men’s field down to the final eight riders, where ultimately, seasoned veteran Sky Solbach (USA) faced 19-year-old Filippe Ferreira (Brazil) for third place, and Airton Cozzolino (Italy) — who won the Mauritius One Eye Pro in September — squared off with reigning Kite Surfing World Champion Guilly Brandao (Brazil) for first place. Ferreira beat out Solbach by a slim margin of .47 points (out of 20), while Brandao earned the highest score of the whole competition (17) and secured the Pacasmayo Peru Kite Surf Pro title.

On the women’s front, Kelly Strachan (USA) faced off with three-time Kite Surfing World Champion Kirsty Jones (United Kingdom) for third place, and Ines Correia (Portugal) met the Brazilian powerhouse Milla Knesse-Ferreira for first place. Jones beat Strachan by 3.7 points, while Knesse-Ferreira bested Correia by more than five points.

With two of three tour stops complete, the Europeans hold a majority of top-three Overall World Championship Rankings, as Airton Cozzolino (Italy) currently leads the men’s pack, and Ines Correia (Portugal), Marie Gautron (France) and Kristin Boese (Germany) hold down first, second and third places in the women’s division.

Live-streamed online, the event featured live scoring and chat as well.

About the KSP
Established as the first ever kiteboarding tour devoted to wave riding, the 2011 KSP Tour delivers three action-packed events in Mauritius, Cape Verde, and Peru.

Sanctioned by the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA), the KSP is the official World Championship Kite Surfing Tour, a non-profit association launched beginning of the year to showcase the pinnacle of wave riding in the best conditions on the planet — the near-perfect fusion of wind and waves that top wave riders dream of.

A class association within the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the IKA governs the sport of kiteboarding, which is broken up into three main disciplines: freestyle kiteboarding, kiteboard racing and wave riding — also known as kite surfing, which is essentially surfing with a kite.
