Maui, HI — December 28, 2012: The 2012 KSP World Championship Tour came to an exciting close earlier this month when the 2012 KSP World Champions were crowned at the Ho’okipa Kite Surf Pro on Maui’s north Shore. In its second season, the KSP Tour traveled to 4 world-class kitesurfing locations around the globe, displaying the raw talent of the top athletes and the sport at its best.
Showcasing an array of different conditions and riding styles, the KSP World Championship tour Tour kicked off its 2012 season in the side-onshore winds and punchy beach break at Guincho Beach in Cascais, Portugal, visited the peeling left hander in Le Morne, Mauritius, featured a unique mobile format with different conditions on any given competition day on the West Coast of Ireland and finished off the tour at the high performance right hander of Ho’okipa Beach on Maui, Hawaii.
A dramatic world title showdown took place at the final event of the season when the top 3 frontrunners in the men’s ranking all faltered early in the draw and the door was suddenly left wide open for the lower seeds. Keahi De Aboitiz’s (AUS, Cabrinha) come-from-behind win at the Ho’okipa Kite Surf Pro not only earned him the event title, but also his first ever World Championship title. Mitu Monteiro (CPV, F-One), took runner-up position on the men’s World Championship podium, while 2011 KSP World Champion Airton Cozzolino (ITA, North) took 3rd.
The women’s title race also came down to the final event of the year and was equally fierce. Jalou Langeree (NED, Naish) managed to snatch the title from 2011 KSP World Champion Ines Correia (POR, RRD) while also defeating world title contender and One Eye Kite Surf Pro winner Ninja Bichler (GER, North) to take the 2012 World Championship title. Underdog Moona Whyte (HI, Cabrinha) turned heads and established herself as a future world title contender with a decisive victory at the Ho’okipa Kite Surf Pro - her first ever world tour event.
Following its mission to promote kite surfing to the masses, the KSP continued their focus on livestream and TV distribution throughout the 2012 season, offering online viewers an enhanced live webcast experience and reaching an unprecedented worldwide audience of nearly 100 Million television viewers.
